I am by no means an expert on adoption. I am however an adoptive parent and avid researcher and reader. These are books that I found helpful during our adoption journey (and beyond) and I hope they might be helpful to you as well.
Books for children
Adoption is for always by Linda Walvoord Girard
This is one of those books that you read when adoption issues or questions come up and I think the book handles it beautifully.
We wanted you by Liz Rosenberg
This book is out of print but you may be able to borrow from your local library or buy a used copy. It really captures the story of adoption quite simply and lovingly offering the key point: WE WANTED YOU...and still do.
A mother for Choco by Keiko Kasza
One of my top 3 favorite picture books about adoption. All of my children (including biological) enjoy this book and enjoy hearing it at story time.
God Found us you by Lisa Tawn Bergren
This is the picture book to give any new parent who adopts. It is right up there with the classic, Love you Forever and has that same feeling.
Happy Adoption Day by John McCutcheon
Tell me again about the night I was born by Jamie Lee Curtis
This is a whimsical picture book that captures how much children enjoy hearing the story of their birth or ADOPTION.
Did my first mother love me: A story for an adopted child by Kathryn Ann Miller
This is probably one of my favorite adoption picture books for children. It explains adoption from a child's point of view while still maintaining the beauty of a picture book you would want to read to a child.
The Tummy Mummy by Michelle Madrid-Branch
Not my favorite book, but a light read that introduces the concept of a tummy mummy to young children.
Books for parents
Dear Birthmother by Kathleen Silber & Phylis Speedlin
Lifebooks: Creating a treasure for the adopted child by Beth O'Malley
Twenty things adopted kids wish their adoptive parents knew by Sherrie Eldridge
DVD's
The Giving
Gives a beautiful look at adoption through the eyes of a birthmother. The book captures birth mothers who placed at different times and have various types of adoption plans (open, closed, semi open). I gave this DVD to our adoption agency and suggested that they include it in their training for new adoptive parents.
ABC News Primetime: Family Secrets: Teen pregnancy and adoption
This DVD gives an inside look at an agency adoption as the cameras follow the adoption stories of two teen mothers who placed their children with Gladney in Texas.
