Evernote

How glad was I to see this post from Carissa on her 1+1=1 Blog this morning?

As a homeschool mom I pride myself in my research but that research often means that I have a lot of resources bookmarked, printed, filed and stored on my computer. Four kids later I have to admit that it's really hard for me to keep track of what I have and what I don't have. Add to that the fact that half of our belongings are in storage while we wait for our new home to be built and you can see that I have some organizational challenges.

Evernote seems to be the answer to all of my organizational challenges and goals right now. With Evernote you can clip whatever catches your fancy on the net and send it to your Evernote account where it is stored and filed in whatever way you wish using various tags and notebooks. It's very visual and allows for easy cross referencing. The tags make it easy to find specific items again and the visual clips make it easy to browse through what you have to refresh your memory when you don't have anything specific in mind.

Remember everything.

Evernote allows you to easily capture information in any environment using whatever device or platform you find most convenient, and makes this information accessible and searchable at any time, from anywhere. Did we mention that it's free?

It works on the web, your computer and on your phone! So no matter what you choose to capture and from what devise you can access it from the other devices. This sounds fabulous to me as I'm a Blackberry Mom! There are versions available for Windows, Mac, Iphone and Windows mobile.

You can feed it your notes, ideas, web pages, pictures, PDF's, and more. There are great opportunities here! Do not be afraid of it. This is really not an overwhelming program and there is an easy to understand tutorial and help article that you'll find in your notebook when you sign up.

I've created notebooks for my:
Homeschool ideas
Blog Ideas
Project Lists
Writing Lists/Ideas

Parenting resources
Decorating Ideas
Recipe ideas (once we try them and like them I'll print them and add to a binder).

You can sign-up for Evernote and test out their free version which may suit your needs. There is also a premium version available if you find that you love it and want to expand your needs. What do you use/plan to use Evernote for?

Review: Skeeter and the Mystery of the Lost Mosquito Treasure

Max Lucado had done it again with "Skeeter and the mystery of the Lost Mosquito Treasure" from the Hermie and Friends DVD series. If you are not familiar with the Hermie & Friends Series you've been missing out. The animated cartoon series is based on biblical principals and told in a way that is both entertaining and easily understood by young children. This story is based on the teachings of Psalm 139:13-14.

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well. (Psalms 139:13-14; NIV)

Skeeter (a mosquito) feels that his famous brother, Sir Sinclair M. Skeeto, can do no wrong with his perfect stinger and sense of direction to match while poor Skeeter has a zig zag nose that he cannot straighten no matter what he does and to make matters worse he is always getting lost. When Skeeter's brother brings a mysterious treasure map left by their father to the garden he is understandably less than thrilled as he sadly watches all of his friends fawn over his perfect brother.

Yet things turn around for Skeeter as he joins his brother on the hunt for the secret treasure and discovers his own gift as well as his brother's less-than-perfect secret.

The important message of this story stayed with my children long after we replaced the DVD into its case. Siblings who struggled with their own feelings of not being as good as their own perfect sibling, sat a little straighter and started seeing themselves as God intended: perfectly and wonderfully made.

An education in laundry

If you've ever been perplexed, as I have, by the symbols on the (sometimes itchy) care labels inside your clothing, then this post is for you! I've found an actually easy to interpret Laundry Guide to common care symbols that you can download and post in your laundry room.

I laminated mine, because I'm nerdy like that.

If you truly want to be the ultimate homemaker, consider Cheryl Mendelson's aptly titled book, Laundry.

Birth Verse

Have you heard of birth verses? A birth verse consists of 366 verses chosen from the 66 books of the Bible. Each verse correlates the chapter and verse with its month and day. Needless to say it is also inferred that these verses should really speak to you and that you would commit them to memory and ponder them thoughtfully, pray over them, and reflect.
I was curious about what mine would be so I checked it out. Here is what mine said, and I actually think it's perfect for me.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28 NIV

What better verse for an insomniac homeschooling mother of 4 under six years old? I often need reminders to come to Him. My reflex action is to carry the burden myself. How patient our Lord is with me as I enter my 38th year of life.
You are a child of God, His treasured possession. He created you in His own image. He chose the day for you to be born. He has a plan and a purpose for your life. Cherish your birthverse.
Are you curious about your birth verse?
Find out what yours is here and then tell me if you think it fits you.

What I want you to know about IVF

UPDATED
As much as I hate to give the Octomom anymore press. I feel compelled to speak up because I've never been quiet or secretive about my infertility issues and I fear that the recent events surrounding the Octomom may cause other infertile couples and their families or friends to have a misinformed view of fertility treatments. Whether or not you agree with or would ever receive fertility treatments; here is what I want you to know.

While it's easy to judge those who are facing infertility you will never know what you would do for sure, until you are in that situation.

The goal is ALWAYS to have ONE child at a time. While there is a risk of multiple pregnancy most reputable clinics consider any multiple pregnancy to be a failure, although they generally have less strong feelings about twins. Most couples or women seeking IVF treatments do so out of desperation for a child. Not a desire to make the news or get a show on TLC.

There is no excuse for being misinformed or uneducated about fertility treatments. There are many online support forums and informational websites. Unfortunately, many people in our society just blindly do what the doctor says. They do not research their medical providers or become their own medical advocates and that is a mistake. Before beginning treatment with a medical provider you should check their stats.

All reputable Doctors give you your options. It is the patient's duty to discuss with their medical provider what they are comfortable with. In our case I made it very clear I would NEVER be comfortable with selective reduction which is basically an abortion. That said, I also made it very clear I didn't want to be put in any position where I'd have to face a recommendation of selective reduction.

When starting an IVF cycle you are tested for everything known to man as is your spouse. As the recipient of treatments for all 4 of my children I am embarrassed by the number of AIDS tests and STD tests I've had to take. I fear someone at the local hospital is probably wondering if I have an illegal night job. Perhaps included in this should be a mental health exam. I know it reeks of Big Brother, but I'm just sayin'. Why a doctor would continue treatments on someone who already has 6 children (they obviously cannot afford), is on wellfare, lives with her elderly mother and is unemployed is beyond me.

Legislation needs to be passed and laws need to change. Insurance providers need to provide coverage for fertility treatments. By not doing so they are causing otherwise well meaning but desperate couples to put all of their eggs (literally) into one basket and roll the dice on having high order multiples because each try can cost $20,000-40,000.

Infertility is big business. But behind the business is an exact science. Unfortunately the CDC rates doctors on their stats based upon live births. If one patient gives birth to 8 babies who live for even 24 hours that counts as a live birth and that Doctor's stats look good, on paper anyway. When researching Doctors and comparing stats you need to look at the entire CDC report including the average amount of embryos transferred. A doctor that is transferring more than 2 embryos in a woman under 35 is probably trying to pad his/her stats and you should beware. After I had twins, even though I was well within the age range for a 2 embryo transfer, my Doctors at St. Barnabas wanted to move my protocol to a single embryo transfer.

Society needs to stop glorifying those who would have so many children and reward them with cars, houses, reality shows, free food, diapers and medical care. By doing so we are enabling people like the Octomom who seek fame and fortune. Dr. Phil recently said we need to put our feelings aside and think of the children and donate to the cause and encourage large companies to as well. While I agree we need to think of the children I disagree with Dr. Phil. Even if the Octomom gets a free house, diapers, new furniture & supplies from Target and organic baby food for a year it won't really help matters. It will only put a band aid on the situation. What happens when the youngest of the 14 children are 9 or 10 and not so cute and marketable anymore? What then? Will they end up in foster care where they will likely remain until they age out of the system? If they are adopted which family will adopt 14 older children at once? As harsh as it sounds I believe its better for the children to be taken away from her at this time where they will at least have an opportunity to be adopted by a family that can actually afford to feed them and has the space for them.

You cannot pick the sex of your children when doing IVF. Despite some media folklore this isn't about making designer babies. Unless you have a medical condition that is transferred to a particular sex your doctor has no idea if he/she is implanting a male or female embryo. So while I may have two boys and two girls----it just happened that way. There are many other families with an even distribution of the sexes who didn't have fertility treatments at all.

Anyone choosing to participate in an IVF cycle must decide what they will do with the embryos that are created. Embryos can be frozen indifinetely but at an annual expense of up to $2500 and that number is rising! How many children do you intend to have? How many can you afford emotionally and financially? Don't wait until AFTER you are in that situation to think it through. You may live to regret it.

And finally, there should be no shame in seeking fertility treatments. It is a medical condition for which there is a treatment. Although not all women have a desire to be a mother, it is a natural biological urge for those who do. Think about that before you start judging someone going through fertility treatments. By the time they have reached that step they have already been through so much...have a little compassion.

I should have my own reality show

I really should have my own reality show. Even though Big Daddy would probably move out or request some sort of black out of his face and body on the show. Some days I feel my life is nothing but mundane moments sprinkled with chaos and other times it's more of a you-have-to-see-it-to-believe-it kind of thing.

Take what happened to me recently.

We have been reduced to special ordering our crickets, wax worms and meal worms because the local Petco doesn't sell enough of them so the quality is bad. And by bad I mean half dead. So I whipped out my copy of Reptile Magazine (I'm classy like that) and looked up the name of a food source for our geckos. I found Bassett's Cricket Ranch. The ranch consists of 48,000 sq. ft. environmentally controlled buildings and warehouses----full of crickets, mealworms and wax worms. In a broken down economy there is apparently money to be made in feeder insects. If someone in your household is unemployed, not afraid of insects and you have some extra square footage you might want to look into it. After my mealworm fiasco I'm going to pass though.

Anyway, so the Fed Ex box from Bassett's arrives on time and though I'm ticked that their website conveniently doesn't let you know that the shipping charges will be slightly more than the actual goods purchased, I let it go. I have hungry pregnant geckos to feed. I open one box and take out my wax worms and meal worms. A couple are dead but otherwise looking good. I open the other box and it takes a minute for me to realize that the crickets were all packed loose in the box. WHO DOES THAT? I mean besides Bassett's! 250 crickets are now making their way out of the box in into my kitchen. At least 25 are crawling on the front of my shirt and NO I didn't stop and take a picture.

I'm screaming----"catch those crickets!"
The kids are jumping around and I'm running out the front door with my hand over the top of the box.

After a half hour or so of cricket catching and wrangling we manage to get the crickets into our little cricket hutch which I then notice is much too small for 200+ plus crickets. No way will they live long enough for me to feed to the geckos so I'm back where I began.

We need a local food source.
I've got a lead on a bait shop down the street.
Stay tuned.

Birthday Wishes & Memories

Today our precious daughter celebrated her first birthday.
And I am hit with the reality that all of her firsts
will now be my lasts.
She is more likely than not my very last baby.
Time is moving quickly.
Doesn't it know I'm not in a hurry?

Today she tasted her first birthday cake.
Was sung "Happy Birthday" to for the first time.
And received the first of many birthday presents.

And I took a long last look at the baby she is now.
Sometime too soon, she will walk
and then she will run.
She will attempt to voice her opinions,
and then finally, she will make her own decisions

One year ago
I gave birth to a miracle.
Our family now had two boys and two girls.
A sister for my daughter.
Like the sister I always wished I had.

Perfect.
Just like God's timing.

Two years ago this month
I lost a pregnancy.
I was devastated.
Full of fear.
I prayed,
I cried,
I begged and I bargained.
Just for a miracle.
Just for a blessing.
Just for this moment.

God's timing is perfect.

Happy Birthday my darling baby girl.
Your middle name is Grace in honor of our Lord
because of the grace offered to us through the gift of you.
And what a gift you are.

Green is more than color

We are at the point in our new construction project where I need to confirm my paint colors.
Sound easy? Sound fun? Think again.

VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Compounds as defined by U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 40 CFR § 51.100 (s), (s) (1).

According to the EPA our indoor air is three times as polluted as our outdoor air. Indoor air pollution is more of a problem than outdoor pollution because of the amount of time we spend indoors (with windows closed) and the various chemical omitting products we have in our homes that builds up the toxicity levels over time. Paint is a large contributing factor to poor indoor air quality and can emit harmful chemicals, such as VOCs, for years after application.

The American Lung Association reports that VOC's can produce a number of physical problems such as: eye and skin irritation, lung and breathing problems, headaches, nausea, muscle weakness and liver and kidney damage.

When choosing household paints it's (unfortunately) easy to get lost in the Low Voc or No Voc labels. What you will ultimately need to do is read the label---just like in the grocery store. A Voc content in mixed paint (remember, adding your color tint adds voc) under 10 g/L is considered excellent.

I've decided to use a NO VOC base to help insure that when I add my tint I will be under a Voc content of 10 g/L. This will work with everything but my darker colors. It isn't as easy to be green as I'd like it, but I'm at least reducing the off gassing in our home as much as possible.

For more information on what you can do to improve the air quality in your home, read Tips for improving Indoor Air Quality or watch HGTV Pro's Video on the topic. I will share my paint color selections next time.
