The former stationery store owner in me couldn't let us get too far into the holidays without this quick little friendly service announcement...
Do. Not. Write:
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays OR Happy New Year from the Smith's.
It is Smiths....as in more than one Smith.
If your name is Jill and your husband's name is Jack...then you are Jill and Jack Smith. Not Jack and Jill Smith. As a general rule the man's first name is never to be separated from his last name. But some like to use the, "Ladies First" rule to remember this. Do not think that you are being the subservient wife when you do this. Pick something else to be subservient about. This is a matter of proper stationery etiquette...and notice I didn't write STATIONARY---that is when you stand still and not a paper product.
Thank-you for your time. That is all.

I never knew the man's (apostrophe meaning belonging to) name shouldn't be separated from the last name. I always put me first because, well, thats who I think about first and like more :).

As a wedding planner it is my pet peeve to see a man's first name separated from his last name on an invitation.
Ditto to lil sis's post (apostrophe meaning the post belonging to lil sis)
(Wow, look at her blogging for the first time in how many years?)
really? i had no idea that you shouldn't separate the man's first name from his last. hmmmm... for the more formal occasions, i usually just write Mr. & Mrs. David Drews.
if i write something that is from all of us but obviously in my voice, i will usually sign with my name first.
very very interesting, m'dear.
I love these tips and we can all use a reminder. Does your skin crawl when you see grammar mistakes? My honey's does. Thank you so much for the SITS comment love and so glad I found your blog...
Haha, you have such wit about rules. Love it!
THANK YOU for the "Smiths" correction! I realize I'm a bit of a grammar geek, but this drives me NUTS! Everyone does it. It's one of those things where when you do it correctly, it looks wrong to everyone who doesn't know the correct way!
I had no idea about separating the man's name - thank you for enlightening me. I always put my husband's name first because he's the head of the household...
