As I was laying in bed with my usual bout of insomnia, exhausted, but unable to turn off my brain; I found myself contemplating a character chart for our family. You see, we have some bad character traits and attitudes developing in our home.
impatience,
complaining,
blaming,
yelling,
whining...
And that is just MY bad attitude!
The kids are doing all that plus tattling, aggravating, being selfish and being disrespectful.
Of course no parent wants to see those character flaws taking root in their children. So, while I was of course focusing on my children's bad behaviors, the ones I wanted to correct immediately, a bible verse popped into my head and convicted me right there in my bed at 2:57am. How do you like that?
How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. Luke 6:42
I need to change my attitude before I can expect to see an attitude change in my children? Yes, I need to change my attitude before I can see clearly enough to train my children in this area. As their mother and teacher they spend the greatest amount of time with me. I am their mirror. I set the tone for our house. The same things I want to correct in my children, I need to correct in myself, first. I need to model the attitudes I desire, not just pay lip service to them.
Oh, and the attitude chart? I made one. I'm doing really good on it.
When I fill up my chart this week I'm going to Starbucks.
I'm introducing the chart to my children next week.
I'll post a copy on Monday and let you know how it goes.

A chart for yourself?! That is positively brilliant!
I can totally relate to the attitude issues... starts with me but also seen in my children (and then some).
